Leeward Islands

Stretching to the northwest, the Hawaiian chain includes many small islands.  Some of these islands are the tops of volcanoes that didn't grow as large as the main islands, and some were once as large as the main islands are today, but have been eroded by the ocean, wind and rain.  Some are only the reef that grew around an island, and the island has sunk beneath the surface.  You can visit each of these sister islands by following the links below to the Bishop Museum website.

Nihoa Island  Lisianski Island
Necker Island  Pearl and Hermes Atoll
French Frigate Shoals  Maro Reef
Gardner Pinnacles Midway Atoll
Laysan Island Kure Atoll
