The official symbols for the State of Hawaii are described and defined in Chapter 5 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, Hawaii's state laws. Some are well known, such as Hawaii's nickname or popular name (The Aloha State). Others are less known, such as the official state individual and team sports (surfing and outrigger canoe paddling). And then there are common misconceptions. The humuhumunukunukuapua'a is NOT the state fish! So here they are, straight from the Legislature's Web site, and they should know, eh? Links will open the actual language for each section in a new window. Just close the window to return. Dates are the last date of action, such as an amendment, and may not be the original date of adoption.  Links to our pages for some of these symbols are in the box at the right.
